Disappointed with the ‘Burgers’ dished out in Chennai on his return to India after a decade of working in America, Sudhakar Peravali (‘Sud’) decided to introduce ‘Authentic’ American Fast Food to Chennai. Gallopin’ Gooseberry was started in 1996 in Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai and within no time had a legion of fans for its authentic burgers, sandwiches and Italian-American cuisine. The popularity of Gallopin’ Gooseberry convinced the owners of the popular ‘Fruit Shop on Greams Road’ to partner with ‘Sud’ and move the restaurant to Greams Road in 1998. Another outlet was opened in ECR in 2005. The ECR restaurant moved to Besant Nagar in 2008.


Gallopin’ Gooseberry did play a large role in popularizing Burgers and Sandwiches and its success led to a lot of new entrants that helped expand the QSR model in Chennai.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Due to commercial considerations, the Greams road outlet shut down in 2011 and later the Besant Nagar outlet in 2014.

But the Gallopin’ Gooseberry story does not end here. The fans of Gallopin’ Gooseberry always felt nostalgic and reminisced the good old days and authentic food at Gallopin’ Gooseberry. Like the legendary Phoenix, Gallopin’ Gooseberry is back to satiate the taste buds of foodies in Chennai.
